How do you access this viewpoint in SJDS? 🔭

The famous Christ of Mercy statue sits high above San Juan del Sur, keeping watch over the beach town. 🤍

It’s also the best view around—and makes for a great photo op in Nicaragua. 📸😉

But to get there, it’s an uphill trek. 👣

And there really aren’t any directions clearly marking the way up. 🗺️😵‍💫

That’s why we put together a step-by-step guide to get to the ultimate vista in San Juan del Sur. 💫

STEP 1: Head to the main street that runs along the waterfront in downtown SJDS. Walk all the way to the end toward the Jesus statue. 🚸

STEP 2: Step onto the beach and continue past the Rio Escondido. Look to the right for a wide drain with a big wall. (Hint: Google Maps marks it as “Path Off Of Beach”) Follow it to the road. 🛣️

STEP 3: Turn LEFT at the “Brisa de Mar” sign. It’s a four-way intersection. Start looking for faded signs that lead the way to Cristo de la Misericordia. Follow them. 🪧

STEP 4: Keep heading uphill. Pass through the Pacific Marlin gate on foot. 🚧🐠 (Don’t worry)

STEP 5: Keep following the signs. Continue straight until you see the narrow staircase up to the statue on your left. Pay the fare, and you’ve made it! 💪

What is “slow travel”? 🧭

A lot of us try to cram in every sight and sound possible when we explore a new country. Does getting up early and running nonstop around a city sound familiar? 😅

Sure, if you don’t have much vacation time (looking at you, USA) it makes sense to want to maximize your trip and “do it all.” 💪

But slow travel turns that concept on its head. Instead of “a little bit of everything,” it’s a philosophy of “deep diving” into one region by picking a single place and staying put. 🗺️ ✋

👉Maybe it’s not going to add more pins to your travel map. 📌 But it WILL add core memories and maybe even connections with fellow travelers or locals. You can think of slow travel as spending “quality time” with a destination. 🫶

Nicaragua is an AWESOME country for slow travel. 🤩 Its simple way of life naturally lends itself to rest and community. Form friendships by investing your time into a small city or town rather than racing through the country from end to end and draining your battery.🪫
