Guide to Playa Mangos: Ometepe Island’s Sunset Secret

What is the best way to spend an evening on Ometepe Island? Some might say it’s “walking on water” at Punta Jesús María. Others would point to nightlife happenings at the backpacker hostels. But before you decide how to enjoy your time, get to know Ometepe Island’s sunset secret: Playa Mangos.

Tucked away on the lake is a little beach where you’ll find lots to do and one of the island’s best places to eat. Most importantly, Playa Mangos faces the magnificent Concepción Volcano, giving you a front row seat to one of the most incredible sunsets in Nicaragua.

Find out everything you need to know to go in this guide to Playa Mangos:

What is Playa Mangos on Ometepe Island?

Playa Mangos is a small black sand beach on Lake Nicaragua that’s dominated by a bar and restaurant. Named for the central mango tree decorating the shore with fallen fruits, it offers a stellar view of the island’s Concepción Volcano. Playa Mangos is a unique site for kayaking, swimming, and lounging lakeside on Isla de Ometepe.

Illuminated by soft string lights, the restaurant creates a magical little hideaway along the water. There are plenty of seats to relax and take in the sights, plus picnic tables for larger social groups. Playa Mangos is a lively sunset destination on Ometepe Island thanks to its incredible vantage point and social atmosphere.

Things to do at Playa Mangos

Playa Mangos is an excellent restaurant, but there’s much more to it than that. Looking for things to do when you visit? Start with any of these fun activities:

Kayak

Playa Mangos is a popular place to rent kayaks and explore Lake Nicaragua. You can go solo and paddle out beyond the beach for sunset, or take a guided tour to Rio Istián for birdwatching and admiring Nicaraguan nature.

Swim

Cooling off from hot days on Ometepe Island is easy at Playa Mangos. Wade in the shallows or swim out to a floating platform in the middle of the lake. Make sure to take your turn on the big swing hanging from the mango tree!

Water games

Playa Mangos isn’t your average beach. It has all kinds of water toys to entertain swimmers young and old. Bounce on a water trampoline donut, take a ride on the banana boat, or go wakeboarding across the lake.

Relax

If you’re just looking for a scenic place to sit back and relax, Playa Mangos is the perfect choice. Hang out on a swinging bench above the water, chill on the dock, or set up a blanket on the sandy shore.

Eat and drink

While you’re at Playa Mangos, you can’t miss out on sampling the bar and restaurant. Grab a cold passion fruit margarita and delicious entree, like tropical thai fried rice served inside a pineapple.

How to get to Playa Mangos

While Playa Mangos is most enjoyed at sunset, you can visit any time you’d like. It’s open from 8AM to 8PM (or 9AM on Sundays), and there’s no fee to enter.

To get to Playa Mangos, head to the Maderas Volcano side of the island. You’ll find it between the communities of Mérida and Santa Cruz. Keep a close eye out for the sharp turn–like many beautiful spots on Ometepe, it’s located down an unassuming side road lined by palm trees. A small sign denotes that you’re in the right place.

HN Hint: A great day on Ometepe Island? Spend the afternoon at Ojo de Agua, then go straight to Playa Mangos for dinner and drinks before sunset.

General tips for visiting Playa Mangos

Make the most of your visit to Ometepe’s treasured sunset secret. Follow our tips for the best time at this hidden beach:

  • Get there early. Playa Mangos isn’t big, and it fills up fast! Make sure you have plenty of time to find a good seat and enjoy the beach itself before sunset.
  • Plan for a photo op. Playa Mangos is the site of one of the coolest photos you can take in Nicaragua: swinging over the lake against the backdrop of Concepción Volcano. Try to snap your own shot while you’re there!
  • Bring a windbreaker. It can get breezy on the lake, especially in the evening. Depending on what time of year you visit Nicaragua, it might get chilly as the sun goes down.
  • Go during the dry season. If it’s been raining recently, the water can get very high and take some of the fun out of lounging on the shore. Much like Punta Jesús María, visit during the dry season (if you can) for the best experience.

Conclusion

Once you’ve discovered Playa Mangos on Ometepe Island, chances are you’ll keep coming back for more. Grab a group and kayak through the weaving waterways, take a spin on the banana boat, and admire a glorious volcano sunset over dinner and drinks. Keep Playa Mangos high up on your list of hidden gems to experience in Nicaragua!
